Charles August, Crown Prince of Sweden

Introduction

Charles August, Crown Prince of Sweden, was born on May 4, 1768, in Stockholm, Sweden. He was the eldest son of King Gustav III of Sweden and his second wife, Sophia Magdalena of Denmark. He was the first Swedish prince to be educated in Sweden and was tutored by the famous Swedish historian, Olof von Dalin. Charles August was a talented musician and a great lover of the arts. He was also an enthusiastic hunter and an avid collector of books and paintings. In 1792, he was made Crown Prince of Sweden and was responsible for the modernization of the Swedish court.

Early Life and Education

Charles August was born into a royal family and was the eldest son of King Gustav III and his second wife, Sophia Magdalena of Denmark. He received a traditional education in the humanities, including Latin, Greek, French, history, and geography. In addition, he was tutored by the Swedish historian Olof von Dalin. Charles August was a talented musician and was particularly fond of playing the harpsichord and the flute.

Reign as Crown Prince

In 1792, Charles August was made Crown Prince of Sweden. He was responsible for the modernization of the Swedish court and was an enthusiastic hunter and an avid collector of books and paintings. Marriage and Family

In 1796, Charles August married Princess Frederica of Baden. The couple had three children: Gustav, the future King of Sweden; Charles, Duke of Sodermanland; and Charles, Duke of Uppland. Charles August and Frederica had a happy marriage and were devoted to each other.

Death

Charles August died on April 7, 1810, at the age of 41. He was buried in the Royal Cemetery of Stockholm. After his death, his son Gustav succeeded him as the Crown Prince of Sweden.
